Study Plans that Make a Difference

Proper planning leads to student success. Here are some ideas to keep you on track.

Assignment Calendar

Instructors often hand out a syllabus to help students understand the overall learning objectives for the class and deadlines for assignments. A syllabus lists broad learning objectives, required reading assignments, homework due dates, and dates of quizzes, exams, and competency checks. A syllabus might also provide a description of the course grading guidelines.

At the beginning of each month, term, or module, plan out your assignments by downloading ABMP’s Assignment Calendar. List all assignment due dates on the blank calendar and color-code items so that they match classes. Post an extra copy of the calendar in your study area so that it’s always in view. Then, use the information on the calendar to create daily study plans as described below.

Study Log

Download an ABMP Study Log and record the number of hours you spend studying for each course, each day. Total the numbers for the week and then evaluate the time you allocate for each course. You may find that the necessary study time varies significantly from course to course. This information will help you plan daily study sessions.

Daily Study Plan

The Assignment Calendar helps you keep track of due dates. The Daily Study Plan helps you plan study sessions to ensure you turn in assignments on time and are prepared for quizzes and exams. Review your completed Assignment Calendar and use it to prioritize study tasks and plan study sessions. For example, if it is Monday, and reading Chapter 1 is due Tuesday, you would prioritize this task over a self-assessment that is due for a class on Friday.

After you prioritize based on due dates, organize your study plan for the day by placing the most difficult or time-consuming assignments first on the list. These are the assignments that make you feel bored, overwhelmed, or stressed. Deal with the hard stuff when you are fresh and motivated. Easy and fun homework will be simple to do after the tough stuff is handled. Complete small, planned blocks of assignments and then switch to a different subject to stay motivated and interested.

If you complete an assignment early and have study time left over, work ahead. Stay committed to studying for the entire block of time you have scheduled. Interruptions inevitably come up at some point during a school term, and preparing for the future gives you some security.
